Art By Gabriele Lodder
(Gabby) was born in the Bavaria region of Germany. As a little girl her father
would tell her stories of how her uncle Paul was always creating some form of
art from anything he could find – be it a piece of wood or a thrown away piece
of paper. Father knew that there was a history of artistic talent in the
family. He always urged her to try since
her brother also is a very talented artist and former art teacher. But Gabriele
never seriously went into painting until much later in her life. She was always
too busy with her daughter, husband and career to even think about it. When breast cancer struck her a few years ago
and she needed to distract her mind with other things that were going on her
husband suggested that painting might be just the mental distraction she
needed. Her outlook from that occurrence
changed her life dramatically on how she perceives life and it is reflected in
her paintings. Gabriele, being a Sagittarius, loves to travel and the outdoors.
Her travels have led her through Europe, the Caribbean and our own United
States. Many of her painting subjects are from photos of her travels that reflect
the culture and the beauty of her surroundings. She began with watercolor
classes with Martha Sweeney and Paul Taylor and went on for oil classes with Pat
Tribastone; sketching classes with Chris Kolupski; all to build confidence and
hone her skills. Soon she was hooked and
wanted to explore other mediums such as pastels taking classes with Christine
thinks that there are certain mediums that make a painting come to life. The
artists’ choice of medium makes a painting speak – whether it is the ruggedness
of a mountain or the delicate beauty of a flower.
Gabriele is a past president and member
of the Penfield Art Association a Signature Member of The Rochester Art Club. She
has provided registration for the PAA for over 5 years and has recently
volunteered to do show registration for the Rochester Art Club. The friends
that she has made in these two clubs, and the endless support she receives from
her associates, inspire her to continue great art.
